Irongate Investment Beliefs
The stewardship of your investments is a responsibility we take very seriously. Whilst we understand that each client has a specific set of goals which are unique to their own personal circumstances, we have a consistent set of investment beliefs which underpin our approach.
We believe in helping our clients grow their capital over the medium to long term. We do not believe we (or anyone else for that matter) have the ability to predict market movements over the coming weeks or months and encourage all our clients to have a minimum five-year time horizon.
Historically, equity markets have delivered the strongest returns for investors. However, as events (dot com bubble, great financial crisis, global pandemic) over recent decades have demonstrated, markets can be volatile and we recommend clients hold sufficient cash to ride out these periods and not become forced sellers at market lows.
We believe high quality active managers can deliver superior returns and we utilise the huge resources available to St. James’s Place who identify the highest quality investment management teams from around the globe, and this benefit is passed to our client's portfolios.
We believe in managers having the freedom to find the best investment opportunities and so typically we select those that St. James's Place mandate to run global portfolios, rather than those with a narrow sector or geographical remit. Managers who can invest in the highest quality companies, irrespective of where that business is based, have the best opportunity to deliver long term returns for our clients.
At the same time, we prefer to see managers demonstrate the strength of their convictions in the companies they invest in. So we look to pick from the range of managers shortlisted by St. James's Place to run their funds, who run concentrated portfolios with typically only 25-30 companies. “Active share”, the measure of how much the fund differs from the index or benchmark, is a key measure we use to only select those St. James's Place managers who retain that conviction.
St. James's Place also recognise that all managers, no matter how talented, will have periods where they underperform and consequently we believe that diversification is important. We recommend our clients have a range of managers through St. James's Place and the Bespoke Stockbroking Service, with different investment styles, looking after their investments.
Whilst historically equities deliver the strongest returns over the long term, we will include other asset classes, including property, fixed income, commodities and alternatives as appropriate.
Tax efficiency is equally important and in constructing a bespoke portfolio we will aim to maximise the allowances and reliefs available to individuals along with tax efficient structures to help enhance the income and growth that can be achieved.
The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.
